SUMMARY

Under general supervision of the Behavioral Health Director job incumbent will: Evaluates patients for mental, emotional or behavioral disorders. Diagnoses disorders, including nature and extent, and determines the appropriate course of treatment for the patient. Prescribes medication when necessary.

JOB DUTIES

  • Completes comprehensive psychiatric behavioral health assessments, diagnosis, psychiatric medication prescription and monitoring. Provides short term individual, couple, family and group psychotherapy for acute and chronic psychiatric illnesses.
  • Completes routine charting to include dictating behavioral health evaluations and progress notes.
  • Maintains client charts in a timely and professional manner to ensure compliance with Medicaid and other applicable regulations to document diagnosis, assessment, intervention, referral, consultation and related functions.
  • Supervises other (Contract) Psychiatrists.
  • Provides clinical oversight for Behavioral Health Programs.
  • Evaluates responses to client intervention, reviews treatment plans and reevaluates as necessary according to applicable regulations.
  • Analyzes multiple sources of data, identifies alternative possibilities to the nature of the behavioral health problem and selects appropriate treatment.
  • Provides training and consultation for other staff or students as requested by supervisor.
  • Fulfills Acting Clinical Supervisor duties as needed.
  • Assesses physical condition and orders various tests (e.g., laboratory, neurological and psychological) as indicated.
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITY

  • Knowledge of adult, child, and adolescent service provision; specialized testing/evaluation; DSM IV – diagnosis; severely emotionally disturbed children; chronic mental illness; dual diagnosis and integrated treatment for substance abuse and mental illness; treatment planning; treatment coordination; crisis intervention; consultation; routine charting; Medicaid regulations; and professional reports, familiarity with Fairbanks area, interior regional, and statewide mental health services and substance abuse treatment providers.
  • Cross-cultural treatment skills and knowledge of Alaska Native cultures and traditions, familiarity with the culture and needs of individuals of Alaska Native descent.
  • Skill in operating personal computer utilizing a variety of computer software.
  • Skill in managing multiple priorities and tasks concurrently and meet deadlines.
  • Strong verbal communication, analytical and interpersonal skills required. Must have initiative and prioritizing skills. Must work as part of a team providing quality care. Must be able to maintain confidentiality of patients.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Education & Experience)

  • Medical Doctor or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine.
  • Current DEA license with the authority to prescribe and dispense legend drugs and schedule 2-5 controlled substances in accordance with applicable state and federal laws.
  • State of Alaska Board certified or Board eligible as a Psychiatrist.
  • Three (3) years experience in a behavioral health clinic or hospital providing services with one (1) year post residency experience.
  • Three (3) years experience with DSM IV diagnosis, treatment coordination, planning, and follow up, crisis intervention, consultation and coordination with medical staff, other agencies and providers, routine charting and writing professional reports.
  • Three (3) years of clinical supervision experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (Education & Experience)

  • Previous clinical experience in cross-cultural setting.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

The work is generally sedentary, requiring routine walking, standing, bending, and carrying of items weighing less than 25 lbs. The majority of work is performed in an office setting with a wide variety of people with differing functions, personalities, and abilities. The office is a non-smoking facility with outside smoking areas. Requires local travel between various program components of FNA which may involve exposure to extreme weather conditions. Works in an environment where protection of consumer confidentiality is essential. Personal Protective Equipment will be provided where/when needed.

SPECIFICATIONS

Supervision Received:

Position receives direct supervision from immediate supervisor; however, incumbent is expected to effectively perform day-to-day activity as denoted within job description. Work will be monitored through weekly meetings, monthly reports, and regular communication with your supervisor. General guidelines for operations are based on program requirements and the general policies and procedures of FNA.

Supervision Exercised:

Supervises (Contract) Psychiatrists.

Position Impact:

Impact at the program level is high. Program’s level of compliance with program standards is directly affected by the effective performance of duties, especially as they relate to providing program services.

Contacts may include, and not limited to, volunteers, organizational staff, consumers, and outside agencies.

Continued employment status will be contingent upon satisfactory completion of a criminal background investigation and the pre-employment drug testing process. Where required, continued employment status (post job offer) will be contingent upon employee providing certification of annual tuberculosis (TB) screening and medical certification that employee does not, because of infectious or communicable disease, pose a direct threat or significant risk to the health and safety of program participants or others in the workplace.
